DeadlyRice Rumour Spreads Panic in Ogun, Lagos

Residents of Ogun and Lagos states are gripped by fear following viral voice notes and WhatsApp messages warning of allegedly “deadly rice” in circulation.

The widely shared messages claim that bags of imported rice smuggled into Nigeria from a neighbouring country may have been cursed, prompting warnings across communities to avoid consuming rice.

According to the circulating messages, a foreign trader reportedly lost two truckloads of rice to theft, which were then allegedly smuggled into Nigeria through the Seme and Idiroko borders. The trader is said to have invoked the spirit of Ogun, a revered Yoruba deity associated with iron and justice, to lay a curse on anyone who consumes the stolen goods.

Further heightening the panic, the messages allege that some Customs officers and a soldier died in Badagry, Lagos, after consuming the rice. Other unverified claims suggest that more than 70 people have died across the region in recent days.

While these reports remain unconfirmed by authorities, the rumors have caused a stir, especially in communities with strong traditional beliefs. In the Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, parents have reportedly stormed schools, urging food vendors not to serve rice to their children.

Despite efforts by some individuals to debunk the rumour, more voice notes have continued to emerge online, with new voices claiming to confirm the alleged deaths.

Imported rice, especially from Benin Republic, is a staple food in many Nigerian households and is widely consumed by children and youth.

The current panic has led to a noticeable decline in its sale and consumption in affected areas.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement addressing the claims, but health and security experts are urging the public to remain calm and rely only on verified information from trusted sources.
