Justice Kekere Ekun Pledges to Fix Judiciary’s Challenges

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has assured that the judiciary is working to address its major problems, including delays in delivering justice, lack of resources, and loss of public confidence.

 

She made this promise during a special court session held in Abuja to honor the late Supreme Court Justice, Emmanuel Ogwuegbu.

 

Justice Kekere-Ekun emphasized the need for the judiciary to regain the trust of the public, stating, “We are working hard to bring about change.” She praised Justice Ogwuegbu’s exemplary service, describing him as a symbol of justice who served with dedication for over 40 years.

 

The late Justice Ogwuegbu, who passed away on October 28, 2024, at the age of 91, was remembered for his honesty, knowledge, and courage. Justice Kekere-Ekun noted that his judgments helped shape Nigeria’s legal system and democracy, promoting freedom, good governance, and justice.

 

The Chief Justice called on the judiciary to follow Justice Ogwuegbu’s example, saying, “Let us follow his example.” She described his work as a significant contribution to Nigeria’s legal system, strengthening the country’s foundation for justice and democracy.

 

Justice Ogwuegbu’s illustrious career spanned over four decades, including service as a High Court Judge, Court of Appeal Judge, and Supreme Court Justice. He was also known for his stint on the Supreme Court of The Gambia in 1999. His legacy serves as a reminder of the importance of integrity, dedication, and excellence in the judiciary.
