Maryam Abacha University Shuts Indabo Female Hostel Over Safety, Disciplinary Concerns

The management of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) has issued an immediate directive for the closure of its approved Al-Ansar Indabo female students’ hostels situated at Hotoro and UDB Road within the Kano metropolis.

The decision, announced by the university’s Vice President for Campus Life, Dr. Hamza Garba, cites significant safety and disciplinary concerns stemming from reported violations of the university’s established code of conduct.

In a statement released earlier today, Dr. Garba emphasized that the withdrawal of approval for the use of these privately-managed hostels is a crucial step in MAAUN’s ongoing commitment to providing a secure, safe, and ethically sound living environment for its female students.

The university stated that the Al-Ansar Indabo hostels have failed to adhere to the regulations set forth by MAAUN governing the operation of off-campus student accommodations.

The official statement explicitly reads: “I am directed by the management to write, inform, and bring to the attention of our esteemed parents and students that the university has withdrawn its approval for Al-Ansar Indabo female students hostels located at UDB Road and Hotoro.”

Consequently, the university has instructed all female students currently residing in these hostels to vacate the premises immediately following the completion of the ongoing semester examinations.

Furthermore, MAAUN has strongly cautioned students against any future association with the Al-Ansar Indabo facilities, underscoring that this directive is for their personal safety and security.

Parents and guardians are being notified of this development, and the university is expected to provide further guidance to the displaced students regarding alternative accommodation options in due course.

This decisive action by MAAUN underscores its commitment to maintaining a high standard of welfare and discipline among its student population, even in off-campus living arrangements.

The immediate impact on the affected students will be significant, requiring them to find alternative housing solutions promptly after their examinations.

The university has yet to announce specific measures to assist these students in their relocation, but it is anticipated that further communication will be forthcoming.

This development is likely to spark discussions among students, parents, and the wider community regarding the responsibilities of private hostel operators and the oversight role of tertiary institutions in ensuring the safety and ethical conduct of their students residing off-campus.

As the situation unfolds, all eyes will be on how MAAUN manages the transition for the affected students and what long-term measures will be put in place to prevent similar issues from arising in the future.
