Desmond Elliott Moves Motion in Lagos Assembly to Promote “Detty December” as Economic Catalyst

Member of Lagos State House of Assembly and actor-turned-lawmaker, Hon. Desmond Elliott, has moved a motion for the institutional support of “Detty December” as a major driver of economic and cultural growth in Lagos State.

Moving the motion, Elliott highlighted the substantial financial impact of December festivities in Lagos, citing official figures that underscore the booming hospitality and entertainment sectors.

According to the motion, hotels in the Lagos Gate area alone recorded $44 million in revenue during December 2024, with one establishment, Chablis, earning $13 million. In total, revenue from nightlife, lounges, and hospitality services during the period hit an impressive $4.32 billion.

He further disclosed that 1,175 events were held in Lagos that month, generating an additional $1.2 billion.

“Of the 550,000 people who arrived in Nigeria via Lagos airport in December, 90% came for these events.

“We must give credit to the private sector. These gains have largely been driven without significant government intervention,” he submitted.

The lawmaker urged his colleagues to see “Detty December” as more than a social phenomenon.

“It is not just about enjoyment or the slang connotation. It’s about revenue for the state, jobs for the people, cultural exchange, and Nigeria’s global image as a hub of vibrant tourism and entertainment,” he explained.

Elliott proposed the decentralization of entertainment activities beyond the central districts of Victoria Island and Lekki, so other parts of Lagos can benefit economically and culturally.

He cited models in the Bahamas and Jamaica, where governments have created enabling environments for tourism to thrive.

In addition to supporting infrastructure and security for events, Elliott suggested greater public-private synergy and even the promotion of Airbnb rentals by Lagos residents to accommodate the seasonal tourist influx.

He called for the expansion of the state-sponsored One Lagos Fiesta a multi-day cultural and music festival held at the end of each year into a more inclusive and widespread celebration that amplifies the voices of local communities, artists, and entrepreneurs.

Following the presentation of his motion, Elliott posted on Instagram to reaffirm the purpose of his advocacy: “It is essential to recognize the significance of Lagos Detty December not just as a time of celebration, but as a pivotal opportunity to showcase our rich cultural heritage and promote tourism.”

The motion, which received strong backing from fellow lawmakers, calls on the Lagos State Government and relevant federal agencies to create a policy framework that supports and scales up the economic potential of Detty December. If implemented, it could mark a turning point in Nigeria’s approach to seasonal tourism and cultural promotion.

“Together,” Elliott concluded, “we can make Lagos Detty December a celebration that honors our heritage and propels our state into a prosperous future.”
