Visit Lagos, Ghana Before Judging Africa, Tems Urges Global Audience

Award-winning Nigerian singer and songwriter Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has called on the global community to experience Africa firsthand before forming opinions about the continent.

Her comments were made during an interview at the 2025 Met Gala, where she highlighted the richness of African culture and the importance of breaking stereotypes.

“Before you make an opinion about Africa, visit Lagos. Visit Ghana,” Tems said during a red-carpet conversation with Fashion Bomb Daily.

“There is so much beauty in the way we live, in our traditions, and in our day-to-day life,” Tems said.

Tems emphasized that Africa’s creative industry particularly its music scene is not monolithic. While Afrobeats has achieved global acclaim, she noted that the continent is home to a wide range of musical genres including Amapiano, Afrosoul, R&B, and Afro Jazz.

Her statement has sparked positive reactions across social media and news platforms in Nigeria and beyond. Media outlets such as PM News Nigeria, The Nation, and Daily Post have echoed her sentiments, reinforcing the need for more immersive cultural appreciation rather than relying on distant narratives or stereotypes.

Tems, who won a Grammy and gained international recognition for her collaborations with artists like Wizkid and Drake, continues to be a strong voice for African identity and creative authenticity.

As Africa’s global influence grows through music, fashion, and film, Tems’ call serves as a reminder: the best way to understand the continent is to experience it.
