PDP Top Shots Move to Stem Droves of Defections, Internal Strifes

In a bid to stem the tide of internal strife and defections, top leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have convened an emergency meeting in the nation’s capital, Abuja.

The high-stakes gathering, which commenced earlier today, has brought together sitting governors, former governors, and influential party stalwarts to address the party’s worsening divisions and chart a course for unity ahead of the 2027 elections.

The meeting, convened by PDP Governors Forum Chairman and Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, is being held behind closed doors at the Bauchi Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja.

The meeting’s agenda is packed with critical issues, including resolving internal leadership disputes, forging a path toward party unity, and strategizing for upcoming polls, including the off-season governorship election in Anambra.

A who’s who of PDP heavyweights is in attendance, including FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Governors Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), and Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa). Former Senate President Bukola Saraki and several ex-governors, such as Liyel Imoke, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and Olagunsoye Oyinlola, are also participating in the deliberations.

However, the absence of several key stakeholders, including Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Bayelsa’s Douye Diri, Akwa Ibom’s Umo Eno, and Taraba’s Agbu Kefas, has raised eyebrows and highlighted the deepening cracks within the party ranks.

The meeting suggest that the absences may be a reflection of the simmering tensions and disagreements within the party, which the meeting aims to address.

At the heart of the meeting’s agenda is the need to resolve disputes within the National Working Committee, particularly with regards to the roles of the Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, and the National Secretary. The party leaders are also expected to discuss the possibility of coalition talks with other opposition parties or a renewed focus on internal consolidation, as the PDP seeks to reposition itself as a viable opposition force.

The outcome of the meeting is eagerly anticipated, as it is expected to significantly influence the PDP’s direction and cohesion in the run-up to the 2027 elections.

With the party facing critical electoral battles, including the Anambra governorship election, the meeting’s success or failure will have far-reaching implications for the PDP’s fortunes and its ability to mount a credible challenge to the ruling party.
