PDP Must Zone 2027 Presidential Ticket to South, Insists Wike, Warns Against Repeating Mistake

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has called on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South.
He warned that failing to do so would risk a repeat of the internal crises that contributed to the party’s defeat in the 2023 general elections.
Speaking during a media parley in Abuja, Wike stressed the need for the PDP to respect its zoning principles, which he argued were ignored in the lead-up to the 2023 elections.
He noted that this oversight fractured the party, alienated core supporters, and weakened its chances at the polls.
“The PDP must learn from its mistakes. We cannot afford to go into the 2027 elections with the same approach that led to our defeat in 2023.
“The party must zone its presidential ticket to the South to restore unity and build trust among its members,” Wike stated.
Wike highlighted the controversy surrounding the PDP’s decision to field a northern candidate in 2023 despite internal calls for a southern contender.
He argued that this move violated the party’s longstanding power-sharing arrangement, which seeks to balance political representation between the North and the South.
The former Rivers governor pointed out that this miscalculation contributed to widespread discontent within the party, leading to defections and internal sabotage that ultimately weakened the PDP’s electoral chances.
Addressing concerns about his loyalty to the PDP, Wike reaffirmed his commitment to the party but stressed that he would not support what he considers to be political injustice.
“I am building the PDP, not tearing it apart. But I will not stand by and allow the party to repeat past mistakes. We must prioritize fairness and equity if we are serious about reclaiming power in 2027,” he said.
Wike’s comments come at a critical time for the PDP, as the party struggles to maintain internal cohesion following a series of high-profile defections and leadership disputes.
The PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) is set to meet on May 27, 2025, to discuss the party’s path forward, including potential zoning arrangements and strategies for the 2027 general elections.
Wike’s outspoken call for a southern presidential candidate is likely to be a key point of discussion as the party seeks to rebuild its ranks and regain momentum.
Political analysts suggest that how the PDP resolves this zoning debate will play a significant role in determining its chances in the next presidential race.
Many within the party believe that a clear commitment to regional balance and internal democracy is essential for long-term stability and electoral success.
As the PDP grapples with these challenges, Wike’s warning serves as a reminder of the deep divisions within the party and the stakes involved in the 2027 contest.
