Adeniyi Johnson Escapes Traffic Robbery Attempt in Lagos, Calls for Better Security

Popular Nollywood actor, Adeniyi Johnson has recounted a frightening ordeal after narrowly escaping a robbery attempt in Lagos on Sunday, May 11, 2025.
This marks the second time in recent weeks that the actor has faced such a dangerous situation on Lagos roads, highlighting growing concerns over traffic-related robberies in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
According to Johnson, the incident occurred around 11 p.m. near the Alapere area while he was stuck in traffic.
The actor shared his experience on social media, describing the suddenness and intensity of the attack.
“I heard a big bang on my windshield, and within seconds, three thugs surrounded my car,” Johnson wrote.
The assailants attempted to rip off his side mirrors and smash his windshield, leaving the actor shaken but unhurt.
Johnson explained that his car became an easy target due to two malfunctioning trailers that had created a traffic jam, effectively trapping motorists and providing cover for the robbers.
In a candid critique of Lagos’ security measures, Johnson expressed frustration with what he sees as ineffective policing.
He specifically criticized the routine “stop and search” operations conducted by local officers, accusing them of focusing more on soliciting bribes than on ensuring public safety.
“Lagos needs better security than those stop and search operations that only ask, ‘Oga, how weekend, anything for us?’” Johnson remarked.
He called for a more strategic approach to tackling traffic robberies, which have become a recurring threat for Lagos commuters.
This latest incident comes just weeks after Johnson reported a similar robbery attempt in the same area. In April, he faced another attack around 7:15 p.m. while descending from the Third Mainland Bridge towards the Secretariat before Magodo – a notorious hotspot for traffic-related crime.
Johnson’s experiences echo the concerns of many Lagos residents, who have long complained about the rising tide of highway and traffic robberies in the city.
Many believe that the current security measures are inadequate, urging authorities to adopt more effective strategies to protect motorists.
The actor’s ordeal has reignited calls for improved road security in Lagos. Citizens have taken to social media to demand a more proactive approach from the state government, including better traffic management, increased police patrols, and the installation of surveillance cameras in high-risk areas.
For now, Johnson remains grateful to have escaped unscathed but continues to warn fellow motorists to stay vigilant, particularly when driving through known robbery hotspots.
