Wike Justifies N39bn ICC Renovation Cost, Says Nigeria Deserves World-Class Infrastructure

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to delivering a high-standard International Conference Centre (ICC) in Abuja, stating that Nigeria deserves infrastructure that meets global benchmarks.

Speaking during a project inspection tour in Abuja on Thursday, Wike dismissed criticisms surrounding the ongoing N39 billion renovation of the ICC, emphasizing the need for modern conference and exhibition facilities that reflect Nigeria’s stature on the African continent.

“We cannot be the giant of Africa and still rely on substandard infrastructure. If other countries can boast of world-class conference facilities, why should Nigeria settle for less?” Wike asked rhetorically.

According to him, the renovation project, which has already achieved between 70 and 80 percent completion, is progressing steadily with all major materials procured. He clarified that the total contract sum is N39 billion, not N39 million as misreported by some critics.

“Let’s be clear, this is a N39 billion project, and it’s being done to international standards. President Bola Tinubu has given us the mandate to deliver infrastructure that will last for generations, and this is exactly what we are doing,” he said.

Wike also hinted that the newly refurbished ICC will be recommissioned soon by President Tinubu, making it available for high-profile national and international events.

The project has not been without controversy. Some civic groups and opposition voices have questioned the cost and timing of the renovation, urging the government to prioritize other pressing needs like healthcare and education.

In response, a coalition of northern youth under the Arewa Consultative Group urged critics to “refrain from politicizing national development efforts.”

“The ICC is not just a building; it is a symbol of Nigeria’s commitment to global engagement and modern infrastructure. We must support initiatives that elevate the country’s image,” the group said in a statement.

The Abuja ICC, once considered one of the premier venues for global conferences in West Africa, has faced years of neglect and underuse.

The current administration hopes the renovation will restore it as a top destination for international diplomacy, trade expos, and policy summits.

As Abuja continues its transformation into a modern capital city, the ICC upgrade stands as one of the flagship projects under Wike’s urban renewal agenda.
