Nigerian Poultry Farmers Suffer Hardship, Face Economic Decline

The Nigerian poultry industry is experiencing a significant decline in sales due to rising economic challenges.

The Jigawa State chapter of the Poultry Farmers Association recently met with Governor Umar Namadi to discuss the issue. The association’s leader, Hussaini Gumel, stated that the removal of fuel subsidies has led to increased production costs, making it difficult for farmers to maintain their businesses.

The high cost of poultry feed, particularly in Jigawa State, is a major concern. Farmers are struggling to access affordable feed, which is cheaper in other states like Plateau.

This disparity is affecting the profitability of poultry farming in Jigawa.

The economic situation has reduced the purchasing power of many Nigerians, resulting in low demand for eggs and chicken. The association is calling for government intervention to support the industry, including the provision of training and capacity-building programs for farmers, especially women.

Governor Namadi has assured the association of his administration’s support, promising to work together to find solutions to the challenges facing the industry.

He acknowledged the importance of the poultry industry to the state’s economy and expressed interest in exploring innovative solutions, including partnerships with private sector stakeholders.
