Foreign Herders Responsible for Attacks, Killings Across Nigeria, Says DHQ
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has revealed that foreign herders are responsible for the majority of violent attacks and killings in Nigeria, particularly in Benue, Plateau, and other parts of the country.
This disclosure was made by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, during a press briefing in Abuja.
According to General Kangye, while some Nigerian herders are involved in the violent clashes, the majority of the killings are perpetrated by foreign herders who have entered the country through its porous borders.
He emphasized that the influx of these foreign herders has contributed significantly to the surge in violent attacks and killings in recent times.
“It is important to note that most of the violent and incessant killings you are hearing in some parts of this country are perpetrated mostly by those who find their way into the porous border of our country,” General Kangye stated.
The DHQ’s revelation comes amidst growing concerns over the escalating violence and killings in Nigeria, particularly in the Middle Belt region. The conflict between herders and farmers has resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives and displacement of thousands of people.
The Defence Headquarters’ statement suggests that the Nigerian government is taking steps to address the issue of porous borders and the influx of foreign herders. However, it remains to be seen how the government plans to tackle the root causes of the conflict and ensure the safety and security of citizens.
The Nigerian government has been under pressure to find a lasting solution to the herder-farmer conflict, which has become a major security challenge in the country.
The DHQ’s admission that foreign herders are behind the majority of killings is a significant development, and it is expected that the government will take concrete steps to address the issue and bring an end to the violence.
