Labour Party Suspends Governor Alex Otti, Key Members Over Anti-Party Allegations
The Labour Party has taken a decisive step against internal dissent, announcing the indefinite suspension of Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, along with several high-profile members of the party.
The move comes in response to allegations of anti-party activities, following the conclusion of an investigation by a disciplinary committee set up by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
In a statement released Wednesday, the party revealed that the disciplinary process began on May 2, 2025, when a five-man committee led by Deputy National Chairman Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi and supported by National Secretary Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim—was tasked with probing the conduct of Governor Otti and others. The committee submitted its findings to the NEC, which convened on May 7 and ratified the suspensions after extensive deliberation, citing powers conferred by the party’s constitution.
The affected individuals include senators, members of the House of Representatives, and other influential figures within the Labour Party. According to the NEC, the suspensions take immediate effect and bar the individuals from participating in any party activities indefinitely.
The statement also addressed the exclusion of Nenadi Usman from the suspension list, clarifying that she is not a registered member of the Labour Party but a supporter of its 2023 presidential candidate. The party emphasized her affiliation with the Obidient Support Group, noting her continued involvement in promoting the party’s broader goals, though outside official membership.
This development marks a significant escalation in the Labour Party’s internal disciplinary measures and is expected to stir political debate, particularly in Abia State where Governor Otti remains a prominent figure. Observers are now keenly watching for reactions from those suspended and potential implications for the party’s cohesion ahead of future elections.
