Kano State Government Bans Live Political Programmes on Radio, TV

Kano State Government has imposed an immediate ban on all live political programmes on radio and television stations across the state.

The move, described by officials as a decisive action, aims to “preserve public decency” and curb the “spread of inflammatory rhetoric” within the media landscape.

The announcement was made on Wednesday through an official government statement, citing growing concerns over the misuse of broadcast platforms to air divisive or provocative content, particularly during politically sensitive periods.

“The government is taking decisive action to ensure that public discourse remains respectful and does not endanger the peace and unity of our state.

“This ban is necessary to prevent the misuse of the media for provocative or divisive purposes,” the statement read.

Scope of the Ban
According to the directive, all live political discussions, interviews, and debates on both radio and television are suspended with immediate effect. However, pre-recorded political content may still be aired, provided it undergoes regulatory review and is found to adhere to professional and ethical broadcasting standards.

Media regulators in the state have been instructed to enforce the directive strictly and ensure that broadcasters comply fully.

Public Reaction
The decision has sparked mixed reactions across the state. While some residents and community leaders have applauded the move as a necessary measure to maintain peace and order, others—particularly media professionals and civil society groups—have raised concerns over the implications for press freedom and democratic discourse.

A media rights group, speaking anonymously, described the move as “worrisome,” warning that “restrictions on live broadcasts could hinder the free flow of information and stifle public engagement on critical issues.”

Uncertain Duration
The government has not specified how long the ban will remain in place. Officials say the situation will be monitored and reviewed periodically to determine whether adjustments or a full reversal will be necessary.

This is not the first time the Kano State Government has taken steps to regulate media content. However, the sweeping nature of this ban on live political programming marks one of the most far-reaching media restrictions in recent years.

What Comes Next
With political activity expected to intensify in the coming months, especially ahead of anticipated electoral contests and party conventions, the impact of this directive will likely shape how political communication is conducted in Kano.

Media organizations are expected to seek further clarification and possible dialogue with the government in the days ahead.
