NNPP’s Senator Sumaila Defects to APC, Citing Constituents’ Welfare

Senator Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South Senatorial District, has officially defected from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The announcement was made on April 23, 2025, through a statement released to journalists in Kano.
Confirming his defection, Senator Sumaila emphasized his commitment to serving the best interests of his constituents, stating:
“Yes, it is true — the rumors regarding my defection are accurate. All politics is local, and my primary concern has always been, and remains, the welfare of my immediate constituency.”
The senator’s move to the APC comes amid internal disputes within the NNPP, including his recent suspension by the Hashimu Dungurawa-led faction in Kano over alleged anti-party activities.
Sumaila dismissed his suspension as baseless, asserting his continued loyalty to the NNPP faction he believes represents the party’s true identity.
“I remain loyal to the real NNPP, identified by its fruit and basket logo, which is the authentic representation of our party,” he declared.
This internal rift within the NNPP has reportedly led several members to reconsider their affiliations, with Sumaila’s defection being the latest high-profile exit.
Before his election to the Senate, Sumaila served as the Senior Special Assistant to former President Muhammadu Buhari on National Assembly (House of Representatives) Matters from 2015 to 2019.
He is a seasoned politician with deep roots in Kano’s political landscape, known for his grassroots connections and influence.
Sumaila’s defection is expected to significantly impact the political landscape in Kano, a critical battleground for both the APC and NNPP.
His move could potentially shift the balance of power in the region ahead of the 2027 general elections, given his strong following and extensive political network.
As the APC continues to consolidate its strength ahead of the next electoral cycle, Sumaila’s return to the ruling party is likely to boost its grassroots support in Kano State, further complicating the NNPP’s efforts to maintain its recent gains in the region.
As he formally re-aligns with the APC, all eyes will be on Senator Sumaila’s next political moves, as both his supporters and rivals assess the implications of this significant defection.
