Tragedy in Anambra as Pregnant Woman Found Hanging from Tree, Police Suspect Foul Play
A wave of shock and sorrow swept through Ideani community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State on Tuesday after the lifeless body of a pregnant woman was found hanging from a cashew tree along the Uke–Ideani road.
The woman, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, was discovered early in the morning by residents, prompting widespread speculation and fear. Local sources confirmed that the tree and surrounding area were clear the previous night, raising questions about when and how the body was placed there.
Initial observations suggested suicide, but police authorities have expressed strong suspicions of foul play.
“This is clearly an act of man’s inhumanity to man. We are treating this case as suspicious and not ruling out homicide,” said Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, while addressing journalists in Awka.
He assured the public that a full-scale investigation has been launched.
Officers from the Ogidi Police Division responded to the scene and have since moved the body to a local mortuary for autopsy and identification. The Commissioner of Police further directed homicide detectives to comb through the area and interrogate possible witnesses.
Eyewitnesses who gathered at the scene described the situation as “deeply disturbing.” One local resident, who identified himself simply as Chijioke, said, “We passed this road around 10 p.m. last night, and the tree was empty. This must have happened in the middle of the night.”
The incident has stirred fear and outrage within the community, with calls for greater security and vigilance. Community leaders have urged residents to report any suspicious activity or missing persons to the authorities immediately.
NAFDAC and other health and welfare agencies are also being urged to support the investigation, considering the sensitive nature of the victim’s condition.
The police have appealed to the public for any information that could help identify the victim or provide leads toward apprehending possible suspects. They have provided contact details for anonymous tips and emphasized the need for community cooperation in solving the case.
As investigations continue, the residents of Ideani remain in mourning, hoping for answers and justice in a tragedy that has shaken their community to its core.
