No Poverty Reduction by Your Claims, Nigeria Still Poverty Capital of the World, ,Obi Insists

The former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has insisted that Nigeria remains the world’s poverty capital, despite claims by the government that the country has made progress in reducing poverty.

Obi, who was speaking at a forum in Abuja, said that the government’s claims of reducing poverty are not supported by facts and figures.

He argued that the country’s poverty rate has continued to rise, with over 133 million Nigerians living in multidimensional poverty.

“Nigeria remains the world’s poverty capital, and it is unacceptable that our government continues to deny this reality.

“The facts are clear: over 133 million Nigerians live in multidimensional poverty, and this number is rising every day. We need to acknowledge this problem and take concrete steps to address it,”Obi said.

Obi criticized the government’s approach to addressing poverty, saying that it has been ineffective and lacking in strategy.

He argued that the government’s focus on grand projects and white elephant schemes has not translated into tangible benefits for the poor and vulnerable.

“The government’s approach to poverty reduction has been a failure. We need a new approach that focuses on investing in human capital, creating jobs, and providing opportunities for entrepreneurship and innovation. We need to empower our people, especially the youth, to take control of their own destiny and create their own wealth, he insisted.

Obi also lamented the high level of inequality in Nigeria, saying that it is one of the highest in the world.

He argued that the wealthy elite have continued to accumulate wealth at the expense of the poor, and that this has exacerbated poverty and inequality.

“The rich are getting richer, and the poor are getting poorer,” Obi said. “This is unacceptable, and it is a threat to our national security and stability. We need to take urgent action to address this problem and ensure that everyone has access to the opportunities and resources they need to thrive.”

Obi’s comments have sparked a heated debate on social media, with some Nigerians agreeing with his assessment and others defending the government’s record on poverty reduction.
