Manchester United Take Commanding Lead in Europa League Semi-Final

Manchester United have taken a significant step towards reaching the Europa League final, thanks to a dominant first-half performance against Athletic Bilbao at the San Mames Stadium.
The visitors capitalized on a stunning spell in the first 45 minutes, which saw them score three goals and leave the hosts with a mountain to climb in the second leg at Old Trafford.
The match began with Athletic Bilbao creating early chances, but Inaki Williams and Alex Berenguer were denied by Victor Lindelof’s goal-line clearance and a wayward header, respectively.
However, the tide turned in United’s favor in the 30th minute when Harry Maguire’s cross was expertly headed in by Casemiro, giving the visitors a crucial lead.
The game took a dramatic turn seven minutes later when Dani Vivian was sent off for a foul on Rasmus Hojlund, and Bruno Fernandes coolly converted the resulting penalty to double United’s advantage.
The Portuguese midfielder then added a third goal just before halftime, courtesy of a clever flick from Manuel Ugarte, to leave the hosts reeling.
Although United failed to add to their tally in the second half, Casemiro’s impressive performance continued, and he came close to scoring a fourth goal with a header that clipped the post.
Despite not extending their lead, a three-goal deficit will be a significant challenge for Athletic Bilbao to overcome in the second leg.
With Tottenham Hotspur also taking a 3-1 lead in their semi-final first leg against Bodo/Glimt, the possibility of an all-English Europa League final is becoming increasingly likely.
Manchester United will look to finish the job at Old Trafford next Thursday and book their place in the final.
