Former EFCC Chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa Visits Buhari in London on His 45th Birthday

Former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, has paid a visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari in London. The visit, which took place on Wednesday, coincided with Bawa’s 45th birthday.

While the purpose of the meeting remains undisclosed, the visit has drawn public interest due to the political and historical ties between the two men. Bawa was appointed as EFCC chairman by Buhari in February 2021, making history as the youngest person and the first non-police officer to lead Nigeria’s anti-graft agency. He was 41 years old at the time of his appointment.

Bawa served as EFCC chairman from February 24, 2021, until June 14, 2023, when he was suspended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over allegations of corruption. His suspension marked a controversial turning point in the commission’s leadership, which had seen him replace Umar Mohammed Abba, who had served in an acting capacity.

Before his appointment, Bawa was a Deputy Chief Superintendent within the EFCC and was regarded as a rising star in Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts. His tenure, however, was marred by criticism and internal challenges, culminating in his suspension less than two years after Tinubu’s administration assumed office.

The London meeting with Buhari comes amid lingering speculation about Bawa’s political future and the unresolved nature of the corruption allegations that led to his removal. Observers say the visit could be a strategic move aimed at rebuilding political alliances or seeking support from the former president.

Neither Bawa nor Buhari has issued an official statement regarding the visit.
