NLC Commends Akwa Ibom State Government for Pro-Worker Policies

Labour community in Akwa Ibom State has expressed its satisfaction with the current administration’s efforts to address workers’ concerns.

This endorsement comes as the state celebrated the 2025 Workers’ Day, with the theme “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship.”

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Akwa Ibom State Council, led by its Chairperson, Comrade Sunny James, commended Governor Umo Eno’s administration for its proactive approach to resolving key issues affecting workers’ welfare.

Notably, out of 25 demands presented by the NLC in 2024, 18 have been successfully addressed, demonstrating the government’s commitment to labour welfare.

The labour leader praised the governor’s administration for its notable achievements, including significant progress in payment of gratuities, implementation of the contributory pension scheme, and introduction of a state health insurance scheme. These developments have been welcomed by workers, who have expressed their confidence in the governor’s ability to prioritize their needs.

In response, Governor Umo Eno, represented by his deputy, Senator Akon Eyakenyi, expressed gratitude to the labour unions for acknowledging the administration’s dedication to workers’ welfare. He reaffirmed his commitment to the ARISE Agenda, which prioritizes workers’ welfare, and highlighted the administration’s efforts to mitigate the impact of economic challenges on workers.

The governor’s administration has received recognition for its pro-worker policies, including a recent award from the Trade Union Congress (TUC). This acknowledgement is a testament to the government’s efforts to create a conducive work environment and improve the overall well-being of workers in the state.

As the state continues to navigate economic challenges, the labour community’s endorsement of the government’s policies serves as a positive indicator of the administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare.

The partnership between the government and labour unions is expected to yield further benefits for workers in the state, ultimately contributing to the overall development of Akwa Ibom.
