Nigeria to Locate World’s Largest Cotton, Polyester Processing Factory in Ogun State

Nigeria is poised to make a historic mark on the global textile industry with the planned establishment of the world’s largest cotton and polyester processing factory, according to an announcement by Governor Dapo Abiodun.

The project is a centerpiece of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and will be launched under the “Renewed Hope Cotton Resurgent Initiative.”

Governor Abiodun revealed that in the coming weeks, President Tinubu will perform the official groundbreaking ceremony for the factory, which will be located at the Special Agro Processing Zone adjacent to the Gateway International Airport in the Iperu/Ilisan axis of Ogun State.

The mega-factory is set to occupy 400 hectares of land, and is projected to employ approximately 250,000 people daily, making it one of the largest employment-generating industrial ventures in the country’s history.

“This is not just about processing cotton and polyester; it’s about transforming our industrial base and putting Nigeria on the global map as a leading player in textile manufacturing,” Governor Abiodun said in a statement.

The plant’s location within the Special Agro Processing Zone near Gateway International Airport is strategically chosen for its access to air transport, local raw materials, and trade infrastructure.

The factory aims to be a key driver of economic activity in Ogun State and beyond.

To bolster safety and stability around the site, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has expressed its intention to establish a base in the area. This move is designed to secure both the factory complex and the airport, as well as provide enhanced security to Iperu, Ilisan, and adjoining communities.

Governor Abiodun confirmed that site clearing has already commenced, indicating that preliminary construction activity is in progress and the project is on track for an official launch soon.

The development is expected to:
• Reinvigorate Nigeria’s dormant cotton industry,
• Strengthen the local textile value chain,
• Create hundreds of thousands of jobs,
• Attract foreign investment, and
• Contribute significantly to Nigeria’s GDP and export base.

Under the Tinubu administration’s “Renewed Hope” economic agenda, the factory represents a bold step toward self-sufficiency, industrial growth, and sustainable economic transformation.

If completed as envisioned, this cotton and polyester processing facility will not only be a symbol of Nigeria’s industrial revival but also a catalyst for large-scale employment and global competitiveness in textiles.

All eyes will be on Ogun State as the groundbreaking approaches.
