Lagos Government Plans Water Taxis Before Year End, Begins Dredging of Channels

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to launch a fleet of water taxis before the end of 2025 as part of the general efforts at reducing traffic congestions.

The initiative, which forms part of the state’s broader strategy to improve mobility and reduce carbon emissions, has already begun with the dredging of key inland waterways.

The Managing Director of Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFerry), Mr. Ladi Balogun, made the disclosure during a press briefing held at the Falomo Jetty.

According to Balogun, the new water taxi system will feature designated ‘water stops’ akin to bus stops, to ensure an organized and accessible transport network across the state’s waterways.

“This project is not just about easing traffic, it’s about modernizing Lagos’ transport infrastructure while promoting environmentally friendly alternatives,” Balogun said.

He added that if operations cannot begin by mid-year, the service will definitely be rolled out before December 2025.

The project is part of the €410 million Omi Eko initiative—a comprehensive inland water transport development plan being implemented in partnership with the French Development Agency (AFD), the European Union (EU), and the European Investment Bank (EIB).

The initiative will see the dredging of 15 ferry routes, construction or rehabilitation of 25 terminals, and deployment of over 78 large-capacity electric ferries.

The Lagos State Government believes this strategic shift to water-based transit will not only reduce road traffic but also stimulate economic activity in waterfront communities and align with its THEMES+ agenda for a smarter, more resilient city.

Construction work on infrastructure, including charging stations and modern jetty facilities, is expected to progress in phases throughout the year.
