Ibori Is Coming to APC Soon, Assures Oborevwori

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed optimism that former Governor James Ibori may eventually join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Governor made this remark on Tuesday during a vigil mass held in memory of the late former Deputy Governor, Professor Amos Utuama, at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Otu-Jeremi, Ughelli South LGA.

The vigil mass, which drew a large crowd of Urhobo political leaders, traditional rulers, and clergy, provided a platform for the Governor to emphasize the importance of solidarity among Urhobo political leaders.

In his tribute to the late Prof. Utuama, Governor Oborevwori reflected on the depth of his contributions, stating, “I’m glad to be present at this gathering, organised for one man whose life touched many.

Today’s message speaks more to those of us still alive than to the departed.”

The Governor recalled a notable act of generosity by Utuama, where he donated a plot of land in Asaba, given to him while serving as Deputy Governor, to the Catholic Church and even helped fund the construction.

“To me, that’s a lasting investment in heaven,” he said.

Governor Oborevwori prayed that Utuama’s passing would serve as a unifying moment for Ughelli South and the broader Urhobo region, urging leaders to put aside their differences and work towards the development of the state.

His comments on Ibori’s potential APC membership have sparked mixed reactions, with some seeing it as a strategic move to strengthen the party’s presence in the state, while others view it as a long shot, given Ibori’s historical ties to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In his sermon, the Catholic Bishop of Warri Diocese, Most Rev. Anthony Ewherido, celebrated Utuama’s legacy, acknowledging his influence both within the church and in public service. Bishop Ewherido offered condolences to the bereaved family, encouraging them to preserve the late statesman’s values—especially his humility, generosity, and godliness.

He reminded the congregation that a Christian’s death is not the end, but a passage into eternal life, urging all to embrace Christ while alive.

The Bishop further stressed the importance of continued collaboration among political leaders for the growth and harmony of Delta State.

“As we mourn the passing of Prof. Utuama, we must not forget the lessons he taught us. We must work together, putting the interest of our state and our people above personal interests,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Ovie Utuama, son of the deceased, thanked attendees for their support and called for prayers as they mourn their loss.

The family has announced plans for a grand funeral ceremony, which is expected to draw dignitaries from across the state and beyond.

As the Urhobo nation continues to mourn the loss of one of its finest sons, the call for unity and solidarity among its leaders has never been more pressing.

With Governor Oborevwori’s comments on Ibori’s potential APC membership, the political landscape in Delta State is likely to undergo significant changes in the coming months. One thing is certain, however: the legacy of Prof. Amos Utuama will continue to inspire and guide Urhobo leaders as they navigate the complexities of politics and governance.
