Alake Backs Establishment of Gemology, Gemstone Department in Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, has thrown his weight behind the establishment of Africa’s first Gemology and Gemstones department at the Yakubu Gowon University in Abuja.

The department, which is a first of its kind on the continent, is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing capacity building in Nigeria’s mining sector.

According to a statement signed by the Special Assistant on Media to the Minister, Segun Tomori, Dr. Alake received a delegation from the department, led by Prof. Adesoji Adesugba, and described the initiative as a vital hub of knowledge for professionals in the gemstone and jewelry-making value chain.

The Minister emphasized that the department will strengthen Nigeria’s mining industry by cultivating a new generation of experts equipped to drive sectoral growth.

The delegation included the Dean of Science, Yakubu Gowon University, Prof. Aminu Dankishiya; Registrar, Gemological Institute of Nigeria, Dr. Tinuke Temitope; and Head of Department of Geology and Mining, Dr. Aminu Isyaku, among others.

Dr. Alake praised the university’s initiative, saying, “The university’s initiative is a commendable leap forward. By building a strong talent pool, we are laying the foundation for long-term development and innovation in mining.”

He also commended the ongoing reforms in the sector, which he said have significantly repositioned it for sustainable growth.

In his remarks, Prof. Adesugba praised the Minister’s ongoing reforms and appealed for ministerial support in securing formal affiliation between the university and the Gemological Institute of Nigeria.

He pledged the department’s commitment to supporting the Ministry’s goals, particularly in enhancing mining’s contribution to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

In response, Dr. Alake pledged full backing for the proposed affiliation and called on other institutions to follow Yakubu Gowon University’s lead in incorporating mining-focused courses. “If we are to build local capacity, we must invest in training at home.

Your department is a crucial step in that direction, especially in gemology and jewelry production. We are also working toward establishing full-fledged universities of mining, and your input will be invaluable,” he added.

The establishment of the Gemology and Gemstones department is expected to provide a significant boost to Nigeria’s mining sector, which has been identified as a key driver of economic growth and development. The department will offer courses in gemology, gemstones, and jewelry production, and will provide training and certification programs for professionals in the industry.

With the Minister’s backing, the department is expected to become a hub for innovation and excellence in the mining sector, and will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the industry in Nigeria and beyond.
