Russia Offers to Share Counter-Terrorism Strategies with Nigeria, Confirms Envoy

The Russian Federation has expressed its willingness to share newly developed counter-terrorism strategies with Nigeria, in a move aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier-General Tukur Gusau, following a courtesy visit by Lt.-Gen. Andrei Averianov, head of the Russian delegation, to Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, on Monday in Abuja.

During the meeting, Lt.-Gen. Averianov highlighted Russia’s global counter-terrorism engagements in 39 countries, noting that the experiences gained from these operations had equipped Russia with advanced methods which it was ready to share with Nigeria.

“It’s been 80 years since Russia defeated Nazism, but the security landscape has evolved,” Averianov said, referring to the rise of asymmetric threats like Al-Qaeda and Boko Haram.

He reaffirmed Russia’s readiness to assist Nigeria, particularly through the supply of weapons and tactical support for ongoing counter-insurgency efforts.

“As brothers in arms, we are prepared to support the Armed Forces of Nigeria with a full range of weapons needed in the fight against terror,” he stated.

He further acknowledged Nigeria’s role as a strategic partner in Africa and expressed Russia’s commitment to helping ensure a safer environment for future generations.

Responding, General Musa welcomed the Russian delegation on behalf of President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian Armed Forces. He appreciated Russia’s continued support and reaffirmed Nigeria’s interest in expanding cooperation, particularly in the areas of training, operations, and military equipment.

“Russia and Nigeria have a longstanding relationship, and this is a crucial time for us to strengthen our ties,” the CDS noted.

Musa emphasized the need for more specialized training programs, exchange of instructors and students, and the provision of modern equipment for Nigeria’s military branches—including special operations units, fast attack craft, and amphibious warfare training.

The CDS also highlighted the challenges facing Nigeria in maintaining Russian-made military platforms, many of which are currently unserviceable.

He appealed for Russia’s support in providing spare parts, technical assistance, and potential arrangements for in-country maintenance or equipment refurbishment abroad.

Additionally, Musa requested enhanced intelligence-sharing between both countries, especially in light of Russia’s extensive counter-terrorism operations in regions like the Sahel.

He commended the Russian delegation for delivering equipment and deploying a team of experts to assist in testing, adding that Russia had “fulfilled its commitments to Nigeria as promised.”
