EFCC Apprehends Fleeing Aisha Achimugu at Abuja Airport Over Alleged Financial Crimes

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the arrest of prominent Nigerian businesswoman, Aisha Achimugu, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

According to EFCC sources, Achimugu was apprehended in the early hours of Tuesday while attempting to board a private jet reportedly headed for Dubai. The arrest took place at the airport’s VIP terminal around 4:45 a.m., following what the commission described as “credible intelligence” concerning her travel plans and alleged involvement in ongoing financial investigations.

The EFCC has not released full details of the charges against Achimugu, but insiders familiar with the matter told reporters that she is under investigation for alleged money laundering and illegal contract awards linked to several federal ministries and agencies during previous administrations. Unconfirmed reports suggest the scale of the alleged fraud runs into billions of naira.

“She has been on our radar for a while now. This arrest is part of a broader investigation into financial irregularities involving politically exposed persons and private contractors,” a senior EFCC official stated under condition of anonymity.

Aisha Achimugu, widely known in business and political circles, has played a prominent role in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector and has been associated with multiple government projects over the past decade. She is also known for her philanthropic work and was previously honored for her contributions to women’s empowerment and entrepreneurship.

The arrest has already sparked a wave of reactions on social media, with many Nigerians praising the EFCC for taking bold action. However, others remain skeptical, citing the commission’s history of high-profile arrests that rarely result in convictions.

“This is a welcome development, but the real test is whether the case will be pursued to the end without political interference,” said Chinedu Okoro, an Abuja-based legal analyst.

As of press time, Achimugu remains in EFCC custody and is expected to be formally charged within the next 48 hours. Her legal team has yet to issue a public statement.

The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to combating corruption at all levels and has urged the public to remain patient as investigations continue.
