Presidency Hits Back at “Desperate Opposition, Partisan Activists”
The Presidency has criticized opposition parties and some activist groups, describing them as “desperate” and accusing them of engaging in deliberate misinformation aimed at undermining the government’s credibility.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency said the recent wave of criticisms from opposition figures and partisan activists was not based on facts, but rather on political motives.
“The opposition and their associates in some activist circles have descended into desperation. They have abandoned constructive criticism and now rely on fabrications and distortion of facts to mislead the public,” the statement read.
The Presidency maintained that the current administration remains focused on fulfilling its promises to Nigerians, and would not be distracted by what it described as “coordinated campaigns of calumny.” It also accused the opposition of trying to destabilize the country for selfish political gains.
According to the statement, despite the negative campaigns, the government’s achievements in areas such as infrastructure development, economic reform, and national security are evident and continue to impact the lives of citizens positively.
“We urge Nigerians to see through the lies and propaganda being peddled. The government remains committed to transparency, accountability, and service delivery,” it added.
Opposition leaders and some civil society organizations have, however, dismissed the Presidency’s claims, insisting that it is their constitutional duty to hold the government accountable and speak against policies they believe are detrimental to the country’s progress.
The political tension between the government and the opposition has intensified in recent weeks, as both sides trade accusations ahead of key political events scheduled later this year.
