Help, Seyi Tinubu Imposing Candidates on Us in Lagos Council Polls, Residents Cry Out
Tensions are rising in Lagos State as residents, political groups, and party leaders express outrage over alleged moves by Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, to impose candidates ahead of the upcoming council elections.
Concerns escalated after reports emerged suggesting that Seyi Tinubu was influencing candidate selections across several local government areas, with the aim of consolidating political structures ahead of a possible 2027 governorship bid.
This has triggered sharp reactions from opposition parties, indigenous groups, and even members within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Lagos chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) strongly condemned the alleged imposition.
Speaking to reporters, PDP spokesperson Hakeem Amode said Lagosians would not tolerate political dynasties or hereditary succession.
“Lagos will not serve father and son,” Amode declared. “This state belongs to the people, not a particular family. We will resist any move to turn governance into family property.”
Adding to the growing dissent, the Coalition of Lagos Indigenous Youths voiced their rejection of any plan to position Seyi Tinubu for higher office. In a statement, the group criticized what it described as the continuous marginalization of true Lagos indigenes.
“Since 1999, Lagos has not had a true indigene as governor. We will not sit idly by while our heritage is further eroded,” the group said.
Even within the APC, the alleged political maneuvering has stirred discontent. Prominent APC member and former Lagos State spokesperson, Joe Igbokwe, described the endorsement campaigns for Seyi Tinubu as “needless distractions.”
“Lagos is too complex and important to be handed over to boys,” Igbokwe said bluntly, emphasizing the need for maturity and extensive experience to govern the state effectively.
Despite the wave of criticism, some youth groups and loyalists have thrown their support behind Seyi Tinubu. Organizations such as the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders and Friends of Seyi Tinubu have praised his leadership abilities, philanthropy, and youthful energy, claiming he represents the future of Lagos.
Meanwhile, other political factions have begun to rally around alternative candidates. Notably, the League of Concerned Lagosians and the Good Governance Initiative have endorsed Dr. Tunji Alausa, the current Minister of State for Education, citing his professional competence and administrative experience.
Political analysts say the controversy highlights growing frustrations among Lagosians over issues of political entitlement and the need for more transparent and participatory democratic processes.
With the 2027 elections still two years away, many believe the coming months will further test the strength of political structures within the state.
For now, the battle lines are being drawn, and Lagos residents appear more determined than ever to assert their voices against any perceived political imposition.
