Akanu Ibiam Airport Reopens Monday Ahead of Schedule After Emergency Repairs
The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, will officially reopen for flight operations on Monday, April 28, 2025, following the successful completion of emergency runway repairs.
In a statement issued by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) on Saturday, it was revealed that the airport, which was temporarily shut down on April 18, had undergone urgent rehabilitation due to a sudden and significant rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section of its runway.
Initially, the emergency repairs were scheduled to span two weeks, with a tentative reopening date set for May 6, 2025.
However, FAAN confirmed that rehabilitation works were completed well ahead of schedule, allowing for the earlier-than-expected resumption of flight services.
“The runway is now cleared for landings and takeoffs,” FAAN stated, emphasizing that all necessary safety inspections and certifications were meticulously carried out by its team of engineers.
FAAN expressed appreciation to airport users, airlines, and other stakeholders for their patience and cooperation during the closure.
“The Authority sincerely apologizes for the inconvenience but assures the public that all actions were taken in the interest of safety,” the statement read.
The announcement was signed by Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at FAAN, who reiterated the agency’s commitment to ensuring safe skies, secure airports, and seamless travel for all passengers.
The reopening of Akanu Ibiam International Airport is expected to restore full connectivity to Enugu and the wider South-East region, a vital hub for business, tourism, and social activities.
