Damagum Laments Mass Defection in Delta:, Says ‘Our Fate Is in God’s Hands’

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been thrown into turmoil following the unexpected defection of prominent party figures, including Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his predecessor, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reacting to the political shockwave, Acting PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagum, described the development as “very sad and unfortunate,” asserting that the party’s fate now rests in God’s hands.

Damagum, who spoke at the presentation of a certificate of return to the PDP’s governorship candidate for the upcoming Anambra State election, expressed deep disappointment, especially considering the PDP’s long-standing dominance and generous support in Delta State.

“If there is any state that should have remained loyal to the party, it is Delta. The party has been very magnanimous to that state,” he said.

The defection of Oborevwori and Okowa marks a significant blow to the PDP, which has faced increasing internal challenges and growing pressure from the ruling APC in recent months.

However, Damagum urged party faithful not to be discouraged, framing the forthcoming 2027 general elections as a broader battle between the ruling elite and the Nigerian people.

“This election is not going to be PDP versus APC,” he stated. “It is going to be APC versus Nigerians. The hardship Nigerians are experiencing today is by design, not by coincidence.”

He also accused President Bola Tinubu of using coercive tactics and state resources to pressure opposition members into defecting, an approach he believes is contributing to the erosion of democratic values and worsening socio-economic conditions.

In the wake of the defection, Damagum assured party members that the PDP would swiftly take steps to reorganize and reclaim its political structure in Delta State. “We’re pained, but we’re taking over our structure immediately,” he said, signaling a determination to maintain the party’s presence and rebuild confidence among its grassroots supporters.

Despite the setback, Damagum ended on a hopeful note, placing the party’s future in divine hands. “We leave our fate in the hands of God,” he said. “And we believe He will help us out of this great situation.”

The mass defection has intensified political tensions ahead of the 2027 elections, with many analysts suggesting the PDP must now undergo significant internal reforms and strategic repositioning to remain competitive in the evolving political landscape.
