China Redefines Modern Healthcare, Unveils World’s First AI-Driven Hospital
China has launched the world’s first hospital entirely powered by artificial intelligence.
Dubbed “Agent Hospital,” the virtual facility was developed by researchers at Tsinghua University’s Institute for AI Industry Research (AIR) and is staffed exclusively by 14 AI doctors and four AI nurses. This cutting-edge platform is designed to simulate and deliver a wide range of healthcare services, from initial diagnosis to treatment, all through digital agents.
Unlike traditional hospitals, Agent Hospital exists entirely online. It operates as a virtual medical environment where AI systems function as doctors, nurses, and even patients. These AI agents are trained using large-scale language models and powered by a method called MedAgent-Zero, which allows them to learn and evolve autonomously by generating and interacting with synthetic patient data. This enables them to improve rapidly without the need for manually labeled medical records.
The AI doctors have demonstrated remarkable performance, achieving over 93% accuracy on the US Medical Licensing Examination comparable to scores of top-performing human medical students. During internal tests, these AI agents managed to handle the medical needs of 10,000 virtual patients in a few days, a feat that would take human doctors about two years to replicate. They are currently capable of diagnosing and managing over 300 diseases across departments such as pediatrics, dermatology, and respiratory medicine.
The researchers behind Agent Hospital believe this innovation can help address pressing global healthcare
