Over 135,000 HIV Positive People Living in Lagos, Says State Govt

The Lagos State Government has revealed that there are approximately 135,000 people living with HIV in the state.

This was disclosed by the Commissioner of Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, during a press conference held at the Lagos State Ministry of Health, Alausa, Ikeja.

According to Professor Abayomi, the figure was based on the latest data from the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA) and the National AIDS and STIs Control Programme (NASCP). He stated that the prevalence of HIV in Lagos State is about 1.4%, which translates to approximately 135,000 people living with the virus.

Professor Abayomi noted that the state government has been working tirelessly to increase access to HIV testing, treatment, and care services. He said that the government has established several HIV testing and treatment centers across the state, and has also implemented various programs to reduce the stigma and discrimination associated with HIV.

“We are committed to ensuring that all Lagosians have access to quality healthcare services, including HIV testing, treatment, and care.

“We urge everyone to get tested and know their status, and to seek care and support if they are positive,” Professor Abayomi said.

The Commissioner also announced that the state government would be launching a new initiative to increase HIV testing and treatment in the state.

The initiative, which is tagged “Test and Treat,” aims to provide free HIV testing and treatment services to all Lagosians, regardless of their income or social status.

The “Test and Treat” initiative is expected to commence soon, and it is hoped that it will help to reduce the spread of HIV in the state. Professor Abayomi urged all Lagosians to take advantage of the initiative and get tested for HIV.

The Lagos State Government has also revealed that 70% of people living with HIV in the state are on antiretroviral therapy (ART), while 30% are not on ART. The government has promised to work towards increasing the number of people on ART, and to provide support to those who are not on treatment.

The revelation of the number of people living with HIV in Lagos State has sparked concern among healthcare experts, who have called for increased awareness and education on HIV/AIDS. They have also urged the government to increase funding for HIV/AIDS programs, and to provide more support to people living with the virus.
