In Veiled Response Obi Cubana Addresses Heir Apparent Claim

Nigerian businessman and socialite, Obinna Oyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, has publicly addressed a claim made by his adopted son, Chidi, regarding being his next of kin.

The situation unfolded after Chidi shared a TikTok video playfully stating he had realised he was designated as such, captioned “Nothing do my shoulder, I just realize say I be next of kin.”

Obi Cubana responded with an Instagram post featuring himself and his biological son, Alex, with the caption “Ancient and modern, eyes on the ball. @dtwalx aka next of kin.”

He further reinforced the point in the comments, replying to Alex’s post with “Correct boy, original next-of-kin.”

The public response, however, has drawn criticism, with many users questioning the need to address the matter so publicly. Comments on X (formerly Twitter) suggest disapproval of Obi Cubana’s approach. @Abazwhyllzz wrote, “Unnecessary. He should have told the guy to delete on TikTok, then solved it internally instead of coming to post sha,” while @Soyecatherings expressed concern about the long-term implications, stating, “I don’t think he thought of the consequences in the long run…This wasn’t the best way to address it.”

The incident has also prompted discussion about the nature of the relationship between Obi Cubana and Chidi. Some, like @Gladys_Onyetem, defend Chidi, questioning if the video was truly malicious, and suggesting it might be a harmless joke referencing the close familial bond. Others, like @DemoOfUK, took a more critical stance, questioning Chidi’s claim given his adopted status, stating “Adopted why you wan dey claim omo onile for another person land.”

The situation highlights the complexities of family dynamics, adoption, and the potential pitfalls of social media. While Obi Cubana’s response asserted his biological son’s position, the public nature of the exchange has fuelled debate and raised questions about how such sensitive family matters should be handled, and whether a private resolution would have been more appropriate.
