Don’t Take Out Your Frustration on Us, Senate Tells Bakare

The Nigerian Senate has pushed back against recent criticisms from prominent cleric and former presidential aspirant, Pastor Tunde Bakare, cautioning him against projecting personal frustrations onto the legislative arm of government.

Bakare, known for his fiery sermons and outspoken political commentary, had in a recent address accused the Senate of failing in its responsibilities, alleging that it had become a symbol of inefficiency and complicity in the nation’s governance failures.

Reacting to the remarks, the Senate, through its spokesperson, issued a statement on Tuesday rejecting Bakare’s claims and describing them as both “unfair” and “misdirected.”

“Pastor Bakare is entitled to his opinion, but we urge him to separate personal disappointment from national critique,” the Senate said. “This institution remains committed to the service of the Nigerian people and to the defense of democratic values. Attacks rooted in emotion do little to advance the national conversation.”

The Senate further emphasized that it welcomes constructive criticism and public engagement, but warned that incendiary comments from influential public figures could damage democratic institutions and mislead the public.

“Criticism is part of democratic discourse, but it must be factual and responsible. Reducing complex issues to soundbites and personal grievances only derails meaningful dialogue,” the statement read.

Bakare’s comments have drawn mixed reactions from Nigerians, with some applauding his boldness and others accusing him of using the pulpit for political vendettas. Analysts say the exchange underscores the growing tension between political institutions and public figures seeking reform outside the traditional political framework.

As the 10th National Assembly continues its legislative agenda amid growing public scrutiny, observers note that the relationship between the church, civil society, and government will remain crucial in shaping Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
