Jigawa Governor Rejects TY Danjuma’s Call for Self-Defence, Warns Against Anarchy

Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has openly dismissed a recent appeal made by former Defence Minister, General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma (retired), which urged Nigerians to take up arms for self-defense in light of the escalating insecurity affecting various regions in the country. Governor Namadi cautioned that such a move could result in widespread disorder and disrupt the rule of law.
General Danjuma, during a speech in Takum, Taraba State, expressed his dissatisfaction with the ongoing killings and banditry in areas such as Benue and Plateau States. He claimed that the federal government has inadequately safeguarded its citizens and called for individuals to defend themselves when necessary.
In response to Danjuma’s comments, Governor Namadi, in a discussion on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, countered: “While he is a highly respected figure in security matters deserving of careful consideration, advocating for citizens to defend themselves could lead to chaos. I believe we have not reached such an extreme situation yet.”
Namadi stressed the need for conflict resolution through dialogue and institutional processes rather than preaching armed self-defense. He illustrated how his administration has effectively diminished tensions in Jigawa State, specifically regarding farmer-herder conflicts, by engaging the community and implementing proactive governance strategies.
“Upon taking office, we employed various methods, including dialogue,” the governor remarked. “We involved traditional leaders and representatives from both farming and herding communities. We convened, reached agreements, and formed ongoing committees to mediate between the parties involved.”
He noted that in contrast to certain states grappling with significant banditry and insurgency, Jigawa has maintained relative stability, attributing this to his administration’s dedication to resolving conflicts and enhancing security at the community level.
Namadi’s statements contribute to the ongoing national discourse surrounding security, self-defense, and governmental responsibilities in safeguarding the populace. While some interpret Danjuma’s statements as a crucial call to action to confront the security void in many rural areas, others, including Governor Namadi, caution that advocating for civilian armament may lead to widespread violence and disorder.
The interchange between the veteran statesman and the northern governor has ignited broader discussions throughout Nigeria regarding the most effective ways to tackle ongoing insecurity while maintaining national integrity and lawful order.
