Angry Residents Besiege Police Station After Truck Crushes Couple, One Other to Death

Tension erupted in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, on Saturday after a fatal road accident claimed the lives of a couple and one other person, prompting irate residents to storm a nearby police station in protest.
The incident occurred along the busy Ilesa Road when a heavy-duty truck reportedly lost control and crushed a motorcycle conveying the couple and a third individual. All three victims were confirmed dead at the scene, causing widespread panic and grief in the area.
Eyewitnesses said the truck, which was speeding, failed to brake in time and veered off its lane, hitting the victims from behind. The mangled remains of the motorcycle and the bodies were later removed by emergency responders.
Shortly after the accident, angry youths and residents mobilized and marched to a nearby police station, expressing their frustration over the increasing number of deadly road accidents in the area. Chanting slogans and carrying placards, the protesters accused the authorities of negligence and called for justice.
“We can’t continue to live like this. People are being killed daily by reckless drivers. Enough is enough,” a protester told reporters.
The protest caused a temporary disruption of activities around the police station, as officers struggled to calm the agitated crowd. Reinforcements were deployed to prevent the situation from escalating.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, SP Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, said the truck driver had been arrested and an investigation into the cause of the crash was already underway.
“We understand the grief and anger of the community. The driver involved has been taken into custody and investigations are ongoing to determine what exactly happened. We appeal to the public to remain calm and allow due process,” the police spokesperson said.
The identities of the deceased were yet to be officially released at the time of filing this report, but local sources said the couple were residents of the area and well-known within the community.
This latest tragedy has once again raised concerns over road safety and traffic regulation in Akure, with residents calling on both state and federal authorities to take urgent action to prevent further loss of life.
