Resist Ethnically Biased Appointments, Sani Tells Tinubu

Shehu Sani, has voiced apprehension over a pattern of ethnically-biased appointments frequently observed across African leadership, urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resist this tendency.

Sani cautioned against prioritizing ethnic affiliation in governmental roles, a practice he described as endemic to the continent’s political landscape.

“The danger lies in viewing power as a conquered territory, rather than an opportunity for national service,” Sani stated.

“Presidents must actively work against this deeply ingrained habit of rewarding loyalty to ethnicity over competence and equitable representation.”

Sani’s comments arrived amidst growing criticism leveled against the Tinubu administration regarding the composition of key government appointments.

Accusations of favouring individuals from the Yoruba ethnic group have surfaced from multiple sources, including figures within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as well as opposition leaders.

Senator Ali Ndume recently warned that the perceived imbalance violates the federal character principle enshrined in Nigeria’s constitution, potentially leading to instability. The Presidency has consistently refuted these claims, dismissing such allegations as unfounded.

The debate has also highlighted perceived inconsistencies within the political opposition. Sani directly challenged the sincerity of critics who remain silent when appointments benefit their own ethnic groups, but vocally condemn similar actions by other administrations. He questioned the motivations of those who appear to prioritize ethnic allegiance over principles of fairness and inclusivity.

“True opposition requires consistent critique, irrespective of who is in power,” Sani asserted, implying some critics may be driven by partisan concerns rather than genuine commitment to equitable governance.
