Nigerian Policemen Accused of Extorting N455,000 from Social Media Influencer in Delta State

A group of Nigerian police officers in Delta State have come under public scrutiny after being accused of extorting the sum of ₦455,000 from a social media influencer in Warri.

The victim, whose identity has been withheld for safety reasons, took to social media to recount the disturbing incident.

According to the influencer, he was stopped by officers while commuting through Warri and subsequently taken to a police station without any formal charges. He alleged that the officers threatened to detain him indefinitely unless he transferred the sum of ₦455,000, which he ultimately did out of fear for his safety and freedom.

The post quickly gained traction online, with users expressing outrage and calling for accountability within the Nigerian Police Force. Civil rights groups have also condemned the alleged extortion, calling it a violation of both the victim’s rights and professional conduct standards.

In response, the Delta State Police Command issued a statement denying any knowledge of the incident. Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, stated that no formal complaint had been received but assured the public that the command is committed to investigating the matter should the victim or witnesses come forward with credible evidence.

This incident adds to a growing number of complaints involving alleged police misconduct and extortion in Delta State. In recent months, similar cases have surfaced, sparking public outrage and raising concerns about the abuse of power by some officers.

Human rights advocates have urged the Nigerian Police Force to launch an internal investigation and implement stronger accountability mechanisms to prevent further incidents of this nature.

The victim has yet to file an official complaint, but public pressure continues to mount as Nigerians demand transparency and justice.
