Rivers Crisis: Wike Lays Out Terms for Forgiveness of Governor Fubara

As political tensions rise in Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory Minister and former governor of the state, has expressed a willingness to forgive current Governor Siminalayi Fubara, provided that the governor sincerely seeks forgiveness.

Wike shared his perspective during a media session in Abuja, discussing the ongoing conflict with his political successor. In response to various calls for reconciliation, including one from former militant leader Government Ekpemupolo, known as Tompolo, Wike emphasized that forgiveness requires a genuine expression of remorse.

“I’m a Christian, and I believe in forgiveness. But you must ask for it. You can’t offend someone and expect them to come to you to be forgiven,” Wike stated.

The fallout between Wike and Fubara, previously seen as allies, has intensified in recent months, creating significant instability in Rivers State’s political landscape. The conflict reportedly originates from disputes over political control and government appointments, with both factions exchanging accusations and vying for power.

Wike’s media aide reiterated that reconciliation is contingent on Governor Fubara admitting his errors and issuing a heartfelt apology.

Despite the growing divide, many stakeholders are urging both leaders to focus on stabilizing Rivers State and work towards mending their relationship. However, the road to reconciliation remains uncertain, as Fubara has not publicly shown any intention to meet Wike’s conditions.
