Lawmaker Urges Hunters to Stop Traditional Practice Due to Insecurity Hunter’s

A member of the House of Representatives, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, has appealed to hunters in his constituency to discontinue their traditional practice of hunting from north to south.

Rurum, who represents the Rano, Bunkure, and Kibiya Federal constituency, made this call during a condolence visit to the families of victims killed in Uromi, Edo State.

The lawmaker cited the growing insecurity in the country as the reason for his appeal, stating that the practice is no longer tenable in modern times. He emphasized that the movement of hunters with weapons from the north to the south is not only outdated but also poses a significant security risk.

Rurum explained that the presence of hunters with guns and cutlasses in southern communities can be perceived as a threat, particularly given the language barrier and cultural differences. He urged the hunters to adapt to the changing times and find alternative, more peaceful practices.

The lawmaker announced plans to meet with hunters’ associations in the state to ensure that the practice is stopped. He also promised to work with his counterpart in the Senate, Senator Kawu Sumaila, to raise a motion on the floor of the house to address the Uromi killings and ensure that justice is served for the victims.

In a show of solidarity with the affected community, Rurum donated N5 million to the victims’ families and pledged to build a school in the community dedicated to the victims and their orphans. The school is intended to serve as a lasting tribute to the victims and provide educational opportunities for their children.

Rurum’s appeal to the hunters is seen as a timely intervention, given the current security challenges facing the country. By urging the hunters to discontinue their traditional practice, the lawmaker hopes to prevent potential conflicts and promote peaceful coexistence between communities.
