Criticism Surrounds Nigeria’s Census Committee Formation
As Nigeria gears up for its first national census in almost 20 years, the structure of the National Population Commission (NPC) is facing significant critique from various parties. Concerns have been raised regarding the appointment of political figures lacking expertise in demography, statistics, or population studies, which could compromise the integrity of the census.
The NPC, tasked with overseeing the 2025 census, currently consists of a board with 83 members. Detractors argue that the large number of political appointees, many of whom lack relevant backgrounds, may introduce bias and diminish the reliability of the census results.
Nigerian census efforts have been historically plagued by political interference and allegations of data manipulation. For example, the 2006 census was overshadowed by claims of falsified records and political meddling, leading to widespread doubt about the accuracy of the reported figures.
Demography and population studies experts are worried that the current board’s composition could echo past errors. They contend that, for the 2025 census to hold credibility, it needs to be directed by professionals knowledgeable in statistical techniques, population analysis, and data collection methods.
“Reliable population data is essential for effective planning and resource distribution in any nation. Political influence or erroneous data during the census will have serious implications for infrastructure, healthcare, and education,” remarked Dr. Amaka Okechukwu, a demographic expert from the University of Lagos.
The politicization of the NPC has sparked apprehension among civil society organizations and opposition groups, who fear that the census may fail to accurately represent the population. In light of ongoing resource allocation and public service challenges in Nigeria, the need for accurate census data is increasingly critical for informed policy-making.
Experts and civil society advocates are calling for a reevaluation of the NPC’s structure to ensure that it includes professionals dedicated to carrying out a fair and precise census devoid of political influence.
As the 2025 census date nears, the government has yet to act on the mounting calls for reforming the NPC’s composition. However, the success of this upcoming census could significantly impact Nigeria’s development trajectory, underscoring the necessity for the process to maintain high standards of integrity and transparency.
