Sola Allyson Relives Demeaning Encounter with Stranger in Lagos Traffic

Nigerian gospel singer, Sola Allyson has taken to the social media space to share the haunting experience she had while stuck in Lagos traffic, which spoke volumes of the discomfort and subtle harassment women face in everyday life.
The incident occurred at the Lekki area of Lagos, a place known for slow moving roads and frequent traffic congestion. She describes that she was stopped at a red light when another vehicle pulled up beside her, to her right. The driver of the other vehicle, a stranger, was attempting to make eye contact by constantly gazing at her. Without prior interaction or incentive, the guy proceeded to wink at her.
Apprehensively upset by the uninvited gesture, Allyson reported that she felt greatly embarrassed and disturbed emotionally. In her update, she emphasized the way the action, though innocuous looking to others, is invasive and disrespectful to the person involved—especially in a confined, inescapable situation such as within traffic.
“This is not okay,” she wrote. “That guy’s wink made me feel vulnerable and disrespected. Women should be able to travel without feeling surveilled or targeted.”
Her revelation prompted an online debate about the subtle but pervasive forms of harassment women face in public spaces. Some of her fans and followers commended her for standing up and speaking out and for using her platform to raise awareness.
The incident has renewed calls for greater public education on consent, boundaries, and respect, and that authorities in government take action to address safety on Lagos roads—not only from crime, but from the emotional discomfort of unwanted advances.
Sola Allyson’s experience is a reminder that emotional safety is as important as physical security, and that small actions can have a lasting impact.
