Lagos Court Nullifies Obasa’s Removal as Lagos Assembly Speaker

Lagos High Court has nullified the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The court’s ruling also declared all proceedings of the assembly, conducted after Obasa’s removal, as null and void.

The court held that the removal of Obasa was unconstitutional and did not follow due process. The judge ruled that the lawmakers who removed Obasa did not have the requisite number of members to form a quorum, as required by the constitution.

Obasa, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was removed as Speaker on June 8, 2023, by a group of lawmakers who accused him of financial impropriety and abuse of office.

The removal was seen as a major shake-up in the Lagos State politics, with many speculating about the implications for the state’s governance.

The court’s ruling has significant implications for the Lagos State politics, including the reinstatement of Obasa as Speaker and the invalidation of all assembly proceedings conducted after his removal.

The court’s ruling is a victory for democracy and the rule of law,” said a statement from Obasa’s office.

“We are pleased that the court has upheld the constitution and restored the dignity of the Lagos State House of Assembly,” he said.

The APC leadership in Lagos State has also welcomed the court’s ruling, stating that it will respect the decision and work towards stability in the state.

“We will work with all stakeholders to ensure that the assembly is stable and functional,” said a statement from the APC. “We will also ensure that the court’s ruling is respected and implemented.”

The opposition parties in Lagos State have expressed concerns about the implications of the ruling, citing the need for accountability and transparency in governance.

“The court’s ruling raises more questions than answers,” said a statement from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). “We will continue to monitor the situation and ensure that the interests of the people of Lagos State are protected.”

The court’s ruling has added a new twist to the Lagos State politics, and it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold in the coming days and weeks.
