Act Now or Terrorists Will Occupy South-East, Borno, Orji Uzor Kalu Appeals to FG

Former Abia State Governor and senator representing Abia North Chief Orji Uzor Kalu has appealed to the Federal Government to act urgently in the deteriorating security situation in Nigeria’s South-East and Borno State.
Kalu pointed out that unless action was taken now, terrorists will take over the places.
In a video statement uploaded from China, Senator Kalu noted that Nigeria’s worsening insecurity needs urgent and decisive federal intervention, devoid of political sentiment.
“The security situation is worsening by the day. If action is not taken urgently, the South-East can face the same fate as Borno. The Federal Government must act now before it’s too late,” he asserted.
Kalu contended that while the South-East state governors were making every effort to combat insurgency and criminality, their individual efforts alone would not be adequate.
He demanded additional federal aid in terms of manpower, intelligence, and finance for security activities.
Kalu’s observation comes in wake of similar warning by Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, recently that the insurgents have started to recapture some parts of the state.
Kalu drew a parallel between the Borno incident and what is currently happening in the South-East, imputing the danger spreading at high speed and should not be trivialised.
“I wish to believe Governor Zulum,” Kalu said. “He has first-hand experience of what is happening in Borno, and what he is seeing could also happen in the South-East if we don’t act on it.”
The senator also drew attention to the economic and logistics importance of the South-East, adding that the zone is a vital gateway for commodity transportation from Nigeria’s ports and refineries.
A collapse of security in the South-East would be impacting national economic activities,” he warned. “It’s not a matter of a region; it’s a matter of a national threat.”
Kalu, who is also Chairman, Senate Committee on the South-East Development Commission (SEDC), appealed to the executive and legislative arms of government to lay aside political interests and bother themselves with the safety of Nigerians’ lives and property.
This is not just political. This is about our people’s safety and security as well as stability in our nation. The Federal Government must improve its act before it spirals out of control,” he declared.
