Tinubu Will be Re-elected in 2027, Predicts General Babangida

Former Military head of state, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd) has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, stating that he was well placed to be re-elected in 2027 if he continues on his current trajectory.

During a commemoration to mark President Tinubu’s 73rd birthday, Babangida commended the government’s reformist approach, describing Tinubu as a pragmatic and resilient leader with the potential to address Nigeria’s pressing issues.

“A pragmatic and action-oriented leader like yourself is best placed to deal with the current challenges, particularly bearing in mind the innovative measures and strategy direction your administration has embarked on so far,” Babangida said.

Though Babangida came short of making a direct statement that Tinubu will be re-elected, his words have been interpreted far and wide as an indirect endorsement for the President to be given a second term. Political analysts interpret the former military dictator’s words as a huge morale booster to Tinubu’s 2027 prospect.

Babangida is not alone in this view. Other influential political figures have also issued declarations of support for Tinubu’s prospective re-election bid. Ex-President Muhammadu Buhari praised Tinubu’s contribution to the political and economic development of Nigeria, but former Abia State governor Senator Orji Uzor Kalu went further by declaring Tinubu’s re-election as “inevitable.”.

“In my own opinion, President Tinubu has shown the capacity to lead and the momentum he has built will carry him through to victory in 2027,” Kalu affirmed.

President Tinubu, who came to power in 2023, has made a package of economic reforms aimed at stabilizing the economy, foreign investment building, and rectifying the infrastructure deficit in the country. Although some of these reforms have been met with criticism, their advocates see them as a necessary step for long-term development at the national level.

As the 2027 general elections draw near, the political landscape is likely to heat up, with endorsements, alliances, and opposition strategies coming to the forefront. At present, President Tinubu appears to be consolidating support from key power brokers—possibly paving the way for a second term in office.
