Flying Eagles Draw Morocco, Tunisia, Kenya in New U-20 AFCON

Nigeria’s U-20 national team, the Flying Eagles, have been handed new opponents for the upcoming 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following a fresh draw conducted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Sunday, April 13th.

The redraw became necessary after Côte d’Ivoire withdrew as hosts of the tournament. Egypt has now been confirmed as the new host nation, prompting a reshuffle of the groups.

In the revised draw held in Cairo, Nigeria was placed in Group B alongside North African powerhouses Morocco and Tunisia, as well as East Africa’s Kenya.
This presents challenging path for the seven-time champions.

Originally, in the draw held in February, the Flying Eagles were grouped with the then-hosts Egypt, South Africa, and Morocco. With Egypt now automatically placed in Group A as hosts, the groups were reconfigured.

Full 2025 U-20 AFCON Group Draw:

Group A: Egypt (Host), Zambia, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania
Group B: Nigeria, Tunisia, Kenya, Morocco
Group C: Senegal (Defending Champion), Central African Republic, DR Congo, Ghana
The tournament is scheduled to take place in Egypt from April 27th to May 18th, 2025. The top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-placed teams, will advance to the quarter-finals.

Importantly, the four semi-finalists of the U-20 AFCON will secure qualification for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, which will be held in Chile from September 27th to October 19th, 2025.

The Flying Eagles, who last won the U-20 AFCON title in 2015, are currently finalising their preparations in Abuja and are expected to travel to Egypt soon for the continental showpiece.
