Ogun Govt Temporarily Closes Olumo Tourist Center for Renovation
The Ogun State Government has announced the temporary closure of the Olumo Rock Tourist Centre in Abeokuta, effective Monday, April 14, 2025, to allow for a comprehensive renovation and facelift of the historical site.
In a statement released on Friday, Mr. Sesan Fagbayi, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, emphasized that the closure is part of a broader initiative aimed at boosting tourism and preserving the state’s rich cultural heritage. The project is expected to enhance safety standards and improve the overall visitor experience at the popular site, which attracts over 70,000 tourists annually.
“Olumo Rock stands as a symbol of our cultural identity. This renovation is crucial to maintain its historical integrity while ensuring it meets modern tourism standards,” Fagbayi stated.
He also apologized to tourists and residents for any inconvenience the temporary closure may cause and promised timely updates as the renovation progresses.
The Olumo Rock upgrade forms part of a larger plan to revitalize key cultural landmarks across the state. In a related move, the Ogun State Government recently revealed plans to develop a state-of-the-art Film and Entertainment Village in collaboration with Terra Kulture.
The initiative also includes the restoration of the late Chief MKO Abiola’s residence, further cementing the state’s dedication to preserving its cultural legacy.
Governor Dapo Abiodun reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding Ogun State’s heritage. “Olumo Rock is more than a tourist site it’s a testament to our people’s resilience and history. We are committed to making it even more accessible and meaningful for future generations,” he said via his official Instagram page.
Residents and tourists are advised to plan accordingly and follow official channels for further updates on the progress and expected reopening date.
