Mbah to Enugu Nurses: Please Don’t Japa, I’m Putting All in Place For Conducive Employment

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has passionately appealed to nurses in the state to reconsider seeking employment opportunities abroad, often referred to as “japa” in local parlance.

His plea comes amidst growing concerns over the emigration of healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, leaving the state’s healthcare facilities potentially understaffed.

Speaking at an event with healthcare workers in Enugu on Thursday, Governor Mbah emphasized the significant investments his administration is making to improve the state’s healthcare sector.

He highlighted the financial resources being allocated to upgrade infrastructure, procure modern medical equipment, and enhance the overall working environment for healthcare professionals.

“We are investing heavily in our healthcare system. We are equipping our hospitals, renovating facilities, and striving to create a conducive atmosphere for you to thrive and deliver quality care. It is disheartening when we invest so much, and then our trained professionals choose to leave,” he pleaded.

The Governor acknowledged the global demand for skilled nurses and the attractive incentives offered by foreign healthcare systems. However, he urged the nurses to consider the long-term benefits of contributing to the development of their own state.

He emphasized the importance of their expertise in achieving his administration’s vision for a world-class healthcare system accessible to all citizens of Enugu State.

“We understand the allure of opportunities abroad, but I implore you to consider the impact your departure has on our healthcare system and our people.

“We need your skills, your dedication, and your compassion here in Enugu. We are committed to making our healthcare facilities places where you feel valued, supported, and empowered,” he further stressed.

While not explicitly detailing specific measures to retain nurses, Governor Mbah’s address strongly suggested that his administration is aware of the issue and is actively seeking ways to make working conditions more appealing. It is anticipated that further announcements regarding potential incentives, improved welfare packages, and opportunities for professional development within the state’s healthcare system may follow.

The Governor’s plea underscores the broader challenge Nigeria and many other developing nations face in retaining skilled healthcare professionals amidst global migration trends. It remains to be seen how effective this appeal will be in persuading nurses to remain and contribute to the advancement of healthcare in Enugu State.

However, it signals a clear recognition of the critical role nurses play and the government’s desire to address the growing concern of healthcare worker emigration.
