Rescue of High Profile Kidnap Victims in Abuja Calls for Inter-agency Cooperation

The recent rescue of a group of individuals, including a National Assembly Director, from the clutches of bandits in Abuja has brought to the fore the ongoing security challenges in the region.

The group, which included Michael Adesiyan, a Deputy Director at the National Assembly Commission, was abducted on January 26, 2025, from the Chikakore community in Kubwa, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). After two months of captivity, they were finally rescued on April 7, 2025, by security operatives, including the Nigerian Army, with support from intelligence agencies.

The rescue operation was a significant success, and the freed individuals were taken to the National Counter-Terrorism Centre in Abuja, where they received medical attention and counseling.

In a press conference held on April 8, 2025, Adesiyan shared his harrowing experience with journalists, describing the brutal conditions he and his fellow captives endured during their time in captivity.

Adesiyan revealed that he was chained for 32 days, a period during which he witnessed the death of his wife. The loss of his loved one has left him traumatized, and he expressed his gratitude to the security operatives who rescued him and the other captives.

The young age of their captors, who were between 17 and 21 years old, and largely uneducated, was a striking aspect of Adesiyan’s account. This has raised concerns about the root causes of the insecurity in the region and the need for a more comprehensive approach to addressing the issue.

The incident has highlighted the ongoing security challenges in the region, with banditry and kidnapping becoming increasingly common. The fact that 60 kidnapped victims were presented to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, following the rescue, underscores the scale of the problem.

The Nigerian government has been criticized for its handling of the security situation, with many calling for a more effective and sustainable approach to addressing the root causes of the insecurity.

Adesiyan’s experience has also raised questions about the government’s strategy for dealing with bandits and kidnappers. While the rescue operation was a success, it is clear that a more comprehensive approach is needed to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

Adesiyan’s suggestion that the government focus on disarmament, rehabilitation, and education rather than solely confrontation is a valuable one.

By addressing the root causes of the insecurity, such as poverty, lack of education, and unemployment, the government can work towards creating a more stable and secure environment for all citizens.

The incident has also highlighted the need for greater cooperation and coordination between security agencies and the government. The rescue operation was a success due to the collaboration between the Nigerian Army, intelligence agencies, and other security operatives.

However, more needs to be done to prevent such incidents from occurring in the first place. This requires a more proactive and preventive approach, including intelligence gathering, community engagement, and social economic development programs.

In the aftermath of the rescue, the Nigerian government has announced plans to increase security measures in the region, including the deployment of more troops and the establishment of new security checkpoints. While these measures are necessary, they must be accompanied by a more comprehensive approach to addressing the root causes of the insecurity. This includes investing in education, healthcare, and economic development programs, as well as promoting community engagement and social cohesion.

The international community has also been called upon to support the Nigerian government in its efforts to address the security challenges in the region. This includes providing technical assistance, capacity building, and financial support for security sector reform and community development programs. By working together, the Nigerian government and the international community can help to create a more stable and secure environment for all citizens, and prevent such tragic incidents from occurring in the future.
