Muhammad to Atiku,.El-Rufai: Perish Another Presidential Bid, Return to Party, Reconcile

The National Vice Chairman (North West) of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Garba Muhammad, has counseled former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai against actions that could destabilize the political landscape as the 2027 general election approaches.
In a statement, Muhammad advised Abubakar to consider stepping aside from another presidential bid, given his decades-long pursuit of the office and nearing the age of 80. He suggested focusing on a role as a respected elder statesman, drawing a parallel to the post-office conduct of former Vice President Namadi Sambo.
Muhammad warned Abubakar against being swayed by individuals like el-Rufai who are reportedly proposing a coalition to challenge the current administration. He pointed to Abubakar’s past involvement in economic policies, including privatization efforts during the Obasanjo administration, questioning what new approaches he could offer.
Turning to el-Rufai, Muhammad urged a reconciliation with the APC, highlighting his foundational role in the party’s establishment and eight years of service as governor under its banner.
He reminded el-Rufai of his previous statements suggesting a complete exit from politics should he leave the APC, criticizing his shift to a critical stance after failing to secure a position in the current government.
Muhammad cautioned against emotionally driven political maneuvering and inaccurate accusations. He dismissed the possibility of defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and emphasized the importance of respecting established political structures.
Muhammad further stressed the need for el-Rufai to align with the principle of allowing the South to complete its term before considering a shift in presidential power to the North.
He praised the current level of harmony and progress within Kaduna State under Governor Uba Sani, noting the influx of former PDP leaders into the APC fold. He also highlighted the unprecedented representation of the North West in key national positions, including the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Deputy President of the Senate, and the National Chairman of the APC, alongside a significant number of ministerial appointments.
Muhammad concluded by emphasizing the prevailing peace and inclusivity in Kaduna State and the overall benefits the North West is currently experiencing under the current administration.
