A Woman’s Unapologetic Choice: ‘Nigeria is My Home, I’m Staying’

A woman recently stoked a heated debate in a recent TikTok video about returning to Nigeria, something she says is most commonly misinterpreted by others. Despite the criticism, she remains unapologetic about her decision, citing personal reasons and a desire to care for loved ones.   As told by the woman, returning to Nigeria is not about turning a blind eye to the country's issues, but about understanding that each country has its own challenges.   "Everybody's country is bad," she affirms, highlighting that insecurity is not a Nigerian phenomenon.   She also states that as much as Nigeria's problems are put in the limelight by the media, problems in other countries are often ignored. For example, she states that gun violence is a massive problem in most countries, but it's not covered so much as Nigeria's problems.   The woman is not opting to stay in Nigeria on the basis of whether her country compares to other nations, but because it is important to her and because it is home.   "Nigeria is my home," she says, "and everybody has their own home." She is not trying to convince others to stay or to leave, but she is doing what is best for herself as an individual.   In a universe where social media sensationalizes adverse news and magnifies a need for urgency concerning global issues, this woman's attitude is an eye-opening reminder that every country has its share of strengths and weaknesses. In choosing to stay in Nigeria, she's not oblivious to the problems it presents, but rather, she's choosing to become part of the solution.   As she so aptly states, "Nigeria is getting home for body, everybody getting home for body." That is, every nation is someone's home, and the choice of where one can be most at peace and contented rests with that person. This woman's choice to remain in Nigeria is a great reminder that home is where the heart is, and sometimes the grass isn't always greener on the other side.
